The Power of Personalization

When templates first emerged in design, I felt dismayed as an analog designer used to creating everything from scratch. The idea of using pre-made solutions seemed like an affront to our craft. However, I gradually recognized the practical benefits, such as saving time and money.

Ultimately, I realized that my choices—shaped by my personal experiences and aesthetic sensibility—still defined the final product. Every museum visit, painting, and book influenced my style, making even pre-existing templates a reflection of my identity. Similarly, if a colleague with a different visual history chose from the same options, their selections would be uniquely their own.

With Midjourney’s image generation capabilities, this personalization is taken to the next level, allowing designers to create distinct visuals that resonate with their individual sensibilities.

Midjourney’s New Feature: Unlocking Personalization

Recently, I noticed a new button in the Midjourney interface: "Customize." It felt like magic. I started selecting between two very different images that the AI proposed, advancing through the customization process. Eventually, a pop-up appeared, announcing: "You have unlocked customization!"

Your images will now follow your unique aesthetic sense. This, they claim, can significantly enhance your creative process. We might even discover new facets of ourselves.

The important takeaway for a designer is that, despite using pre-made templates, illustrations, icons, and so on, the final result will always be unconsciously personalized, reflecting your unique sensibility.

A Unique Aesthetic in Every Choice

You can also disable customization in Midjourney, but I find the concept brilliant. Even if you turn off this option, the outcome will still reflect YOU. No more imposter syndrome! Embrace the blend of creativity and convenience, knowing that your individual aesthetic will shine through, no matter the tools you use.
